Dalem Penataran Ped temple
Dalem Penataran Ped, is dedicated to Jero Gede Macaling
and built from volcanic sandstone and local limestone,
lies 5km east ofToyapakeh on the Sampalan road.
There are few statues or intricate carvings, but the size of the courtyards and the grand entrances are impressive, emphasizing the prestige of the temple, which many regard as one of the most important in Bali.
Jero Gede Macaling, also known as I Macaling, is feared throughout Bali. He is believed to be responsible for disease and floods, which he brings across to the mainland from Nusa Penida, landing at Lebih, south of Gianyar. The odalan festival here is extremely well attended by pilgrims hoping to stave off sickness and ill-fortune; every three years a larger usaba festival draws enormous crowds.
