Jagatnata temple
Just over the north wall of the Bali Museum stands the modern state temple of Jagatnata, set in a fragrant garden of pomegranate and frangipani trees. As with nearly every temple in Bali, Jagatnata temple is designed as three courtyards, though in this case the middle courtyard is so compressed as to be little more than a gallery encircled by a moat. Carvings of lotus flowers and frogs adorn the tiny stone bridge that spans the moat (access at festival times only) and there are reliefs illustrating scenes from the Ramayana and Mahahharata carved into the gallery’s outer wall. Twice a month, on the occasion of the full moon and of the new moon, festivals are held here, with wayang kulit (shadow puppet) shows performed from around 9pm in the outer courtyard.
